A Lab for the Synthesis of Sustainability Pillars
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is the largest university in Greece. Sustainable Engineering Laboratory – SEL (former Laboratory of Heat Transfer and Environmental Engineering) belongs to the Faculty of Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering. The Lab has a long record of research activities on the interactions between Environment, Energy and Economy, both at national and international level, having successfully completed over 200 projects, with partners such as regional authorities, universities, and SMEs. SEL conducts basic & applied research in the field of environmental management, synthesis of sustainability pillars and sustainable development for different sectors of economy. More specifically:
- Waste treatment technologies and management systems with an emphasis on biowaste and biomass utilization issues towards successful circular economy business models.
- Energy use rationalization with emphasis on energy circularity and utilization in industry.
- Technological solutions for environmental protection based on sustainability principles.
- Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) and eco-design of products/ services by refining design principles and by studying its environmental impacts and social benefits.
- Energy strategies with an emphasis on climate change prevention and adaptation with theoretical and modeling studies and developing tools to reduce GHG emissions.
- Air pollutant measurement techniques, developing novel experimental methods in the Laboratory’s infrastructure and with the use of appropriate numerical simulation methods.
